While all of us have been baking in the heat, I’ve been in a meeting with one of the UK’s standards committees, helping to write the new global guidance for net-zero.

ISO 14060 will be a new global standard that defines how businesses (and other organisations!) can credibly work towards net-zero.

As an engineer, I worked on international standards for energy using products, defining how their carbon-saving benefits could be measured.

Now I’m fortunate enough to be contributing to the guidance that could help the whole world move towards net-zero in a fair and meaningful way – no false claims, no easy cheating, and a level playing field for all businesses to move together towards a net-zero economy.

As we sit thorough historic heat waves and drought, this work feels more important and urgent than ever. Standards aren’t the most shiny part of the path to net zero, but they are absolutely essential, and if we are focussed on practical solutions, then high-quality globally-agreed standards are a really excellent step in a vital direction.

Worcester is trying a new way of doing politics.

Over two Saturday afternoons, a group of Worcester residents, who don’t usually engage in politics, met with me to come up with a vision for a stronger Worcester community and a list of actions that I and Worcester residents – people like them and you – could take to help make that a reality.
